Zamfara State Government Declares Armed Syndicates Cannot Outmatch Sovereign Power, Rules Out Peace Pacts

Governor Lawal pointed out that historical attempts by previous administrations to negotiate with bandits fundamentally backfired. Rather than yielding lasting stability, those compromises provided armed groups with breathing room to consolidate, re-arm, and leverage state resources to expand their kidnapping and cattle rustling enterprises.

Zamfara State Government Declares Armed Syndicates Cannot Outmatch Sovereign Power, Rules Out Peace Pacts

The Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, has strongly reaffirmed his administration's absolute refusal to engage in negotiations or sign truce agreements with bandits. Speaking during an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, the governor declared that brokering backchannel peace deals with armed criminal factions is officially considered an offense within Zamfara, insisting that dialogue only weakens state authority and emboldens terrorist networks.

The governor’s hardline remarks follow recent local reports indicating that certain independent actors and communities had unilaterally brokered localized truce arrangements with bandit leaders terrorizing rural districts.

Governor Lawal explicitly distanced his administration from these developments, emphasizing that any individuals participating in such discussions are acting entirely on their own and do not possess the authorization or backing of the state government.
