World Cup 2026: Messi Reveals What Argentina Relies On

Argentina captain Lionel Messi has revealed the key qualities behind his team’s success after the reigning world champions secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over England to reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

Messi inspired Argentina’s comeback by providing assists for both goals as Lionel Scaloni’s side overturned a second-half deficit to book a place in Sunday’s final against Spain.

Enzo Fernandez levelled the score before Lautaro Martinez headed home a late winner from another Messi cross, sealing Argentina’s place in a second consecutive World Cup final.

Speaking after the thrilling semi-final, the 39-year-old attributed Argentina’s success to the team’s competitive mentality, confidence and determination to fight until the final whistle.

“We rely on competition, with strong self-esteem and excellent performance, to fight for every match,” Messi said.

The Inter Miami forward praised his teammates for refusing to give up after falling behind against England and highlighted the aggressive approach that eventually turned the match in Argentina’s favour.

“Because today we played a great game, pressing England in front of their goal after falling behind,” he added.

Messi also expressed his delight at once again bringing joy to football fans in Argentina following another memorable World Cup performance.

“So, I am very happy, enjoying all of this, and proud and happy to be able to bring joy to all Argentines once again,” he said.

Argentina entered the tournament as defending champions after winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and are now one victory away from becoming the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the title.

Messi has been instrumental throughout the competition, contributing crucial goals and assists as Argentina progressed through the knockout rounds.

The veteran forward will now attempt to guide his country to another World Cup triumph when Argentina face European champions Spain in Sunday’s final.

Victory would mark another historic achievement for Messi and his teammates, further cementing Argentina’s place among football’s greatest international teams.
