World Cup 2026: England Cannot Win Without Declan Rice — Scott Parker
Scott Parker says Declan Rice is indispensable to England’s World Cup ambitions, insisting the Arsenal midfielder must start despite fitness concerns ahead of the Three Lions’ Round of 32 clash.
Former England midfielder Scott Parker has warned that England’s hopes of winning the 2026 FIFA World Cup depend heavily on Arsenal star Declan Rice, insisting head coach Thomas Tuchel must keep him in the starting lineup.
Parker made the remarks amid growing debate over whether Rice should be rested for England’s Round of 32 encounter against the Democratic Republic of Congo due to ongoing fitness concerns.
The Arsenal midfielder was left out of England’s final group-stage match against Panama after managing a persistent back problem and carrying the risk of suspension following a yellow card in the draw against Ghana.
His absence has prompted suggestions that Tuchel could rely solely on Elliot Anderson in the defensive midfield role, particularly against a DR Congo side expected to spend long periods without possession.
Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes recently argued that Anderson should start alone in midfield, with Rice remaining on the bench.
However, Parker strongly disagreed, describing Rice as one of the foundations of England’s team.
“Four words come to mind when I think about England’s chances of winning the World Cup: we need Declan Rice,” Parker told The Telegraph.
He acknowledged concerns over Rice’s physical condition but insisted the midfielder remains irreplaceable.
“The concern for his wellbeing is understandable. But Declan is pivotal. If England are going to go deep in this tournament, he is one of Thomas Tuchel’s foundation pillars – a manager’s dream.”
Parker praised Rice’s versatility, highlighting his ability to operate both as a holding midfielder and in a more advanced role.
According to him, Rice’s physical strength, ability to carry the ball forward and leadership make him one of the most complete midfielders in world football.
He also pointed to Rice’s quality from set-pieces, describing his delivery as consistently world-class and an important attacking weapon for England.
“The key to England’s midfield is Rice,” Parker added.
England are aiming to win their first FIFA World Cup since lifting the trophy in 1966.
Tuchel, who succeeded Gareth Southgate as England manager, will be hoping to guide the Three Lions past DR Congo and into the Round of 16.
Should England progress, they will face either Ecuador or tournament co-hosts Mexico in the next round as they continue their pursuit of a second World Cup title.
