Infantino Faces Ethics Complaint Over FIFA Peace Prize Awarded to Trump
FIFA President Gianni Infantino is facing an ethics complaint over his decision to award Donald Trump the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize. Critics say the move violated FIFA's political neutrality rules and have called for an independent investigation.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino is facing a fresh ethics complaint after awarding the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize to United States President Donald Trump, with critics alleging the decision breached the governing body's rules on political neutrality. The complaint has gained support from dozens of European lawmakers, intensifying scrutiny of FIFA's leadership during the 2026 World Cup.
The complaint was originally filed by human rights organisation FairSquare and argues that Infantino's public endorsement of Trump, including the presentation of the FIFA Peace Prize in December 2025, violated provisions of FIFA's Code of Ethics requiring officials to remain politically neutral. The campaign has since received backing from members of the European Parliament, who have called for an independent investigation.
According to the lawmakers, FIFA has yet to explain the criteria used to create and award the Peace Prize, raising concerns about transparency and governance within world football. They contend that the award risks undermining FIFA's credibility by creating the perception that the organisation is aligning itself with political leaders.
Infantino has not publicly responded to the latest complaint, while FIFA has maintained that its ethics processes operate independently. The controversy comes at a time when the world football governing body is already facing increased scrutiny over governance, human rights and political neutrality during the expanded 2026 World Cup.
If accepted, the complaint could lead FIFA's Ethics Committee to examine whether Infantino's actions complied with the organisation's internal regulations. However, no formal disciplinary action has been announced, and the outcome of the complaint remains uncertain.
