World Cup 2026: Neto Slams Ancelotti Over Brazil’s Performance Against Japan

Former Brazil international and Corinthians legend Craque Neto has criticised head coach Carlo Ancelotti following Brazil’s underwhelming performance in their 2-1 victory over Japan in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Although Brazil progressed to the Round of 16, Neto questioned both Ancelotti’s tactical decisions and the performances of several players, particularly the continued absence of Neymar.

Brazil struggled for long periods against Japan, who stunned the five-time world champions by taking the lead in the 29th minute through Kaishu Sano.

The South Americans improved significantly after the interval, with Casemiro equalising in the 56th minute before substitute Gabriel Martinelli scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner in the 95th minute.

The victory secured Brazil a place in the next round, where they will face either Norway or Ivory Coast.

Despite the comeback, Neto was unimpressed by Brazil’s overall display and expressed frustration with Ancelotti’s handling of Neymar.

In a video shared on social media after the match, the former midfielder questioned why the veteran forward remained on the bench while Brazil searched for a winning goal.

“What a lie this is about Neymar, the coaching staff, the medical department. They’re messing around,” Neto said.

“Against Japan? Not playing him? Put the guy in to play. When are you going to play Neymar? In the quarter-finals? In the semi-finals? In the final? What a joke.”

Neto also singled out several players for criticism, beginning with Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha.

According to him, some members of the Brazilian squad failed to show enough urgency during the match.

“Matheus Cunha was walking, Rayan… Why didn’t you put Danilo (Santos) in?” he added.

Brazil entered the tournament among the favourites to win the World Cup but have yet to produce the dominant performances many supporters expected.

While the victory over Japan extended their campaign, questions continue to surround the team’s consistency and attacking efficiency.

Ancelotti has so far defended his squad selection and tactical approach, insisting that Brazil are focused on winning rather than entertaining.

The Selecao will now turn their attention to the Round of 16, where they hope to deliver a more convincing performance as the competition intensifies.
