Morocco booked their place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties following a dramatic 1-1 draw after extra time in Monterrey on Monday.

Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou emerged as Morocco’s hero, saving Crysencio Summerville’s decisive penalty before Ismael Saibari calmly converted the winning spot-kick to send the Atlas Lions through.

The victory sets up a Round of 16 encounter against Canada in Houston.

The knockout clash had produced high drama long before the penalty shoot-out, with Morocco forcing extra time through Issa Diop’s stoppage-time equaliser after appearing destined for elimination.

The Netherlands had taken the lead midway through the second half through Cody Gakpo, who celebrated emotionally just days after reports confirmed the death of his unborn child.

Liverpool forward Gakpo was embraced by teammates as emotions overwhelmed him following the goal.

Morocco had earlier created the better opportunities during a fiercely contested encounter.

Neil El Aynaoui came close from an Achraf Hakimi corner before Bart Verbruggen produced a superb reflex save to deny him. The Dutch goalkeeper was called into action again moments later to push Hakimi’s powerful strike over the crossbar.

The physical nature of the contest saw both teams commit heavy challenges, with referee Wilton Sampaio frequently called into action to calm tensions.

The Netherlands enjoyed more possession but struggled to convert their dominance into clear scoring opportunities.

Their best first-half effort came through Micky van de Ven, whose fierce long-range strike was tipped over by Bounou.

Ronald Koeman’s substitutions proved effective after the break as Wout Weghorst immediately influenced play, flicking on a long pass that allowed Summerville to set up Gakpo for the opening goal.

However, Morocco refused to surrender and found a dramatic equaliser in the first minute of stoppage time when Diop headed home from Chemsdine Talbi’s cross.

Extra time produced further chances, with Soufiane Rahimi denied by an outstanding save from Verbruggen before the tie was eventually settled from the penalty spot.

Despite El Aynaoui missing Morocco’s opening penalty, Bounou’s decisive save and Saibari’s composed finish secured a famous victory that keeps Morocco’s World Cup dream alive and sends the Netherlands crashing out of the tournament.
