Former Sweden international Zlatan Ibrahimovic has criticised Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman following the Dutch side’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, blaming the coach’s tactics for the defeat to Morocco.

The former Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United and AC Milan striker made the comments during Fox Sports’ post-match analysis after Morocco secured a place in the Round of 16.

Morocco defeated the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties after an entertaining contest finished 1-1 following 120 minutes of football.

Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou emerged as the hero for the Atlas Lions after saving Crysencio Summerville’s penalty before PSV Eindhoven forward Ismael Saibari converted the decisive spot-kick.

Reacting to the result, Ibrahimovic said he no longer recognised the style of play associated with the Dutch national team.

“This defeat is Koeman’s fault because I didn’t recognize this Dutch team,” Ibrahimovic said.

“He lost with an identity that is not the Dutch identity. That makes me angry. I was always taught: attack, attack, attack.”

The Swedish football icon suggested that the Netherlands abandoned the traditional attacking philosophy that has defined the country’s football for decades.

He also praised Morocco and head coach Mohamed Ouahbi for their confidence and fearless approach throughout the tournament.

According to Ibrahimovic, Morocco deserved respect because they entered the match believing they could compete with any opponent.

“He said he is not afraid of anybody. Another reason to respect this Moroccan team because playing so low and Morocco has possession, and they don’t look comfortable with this defensive part, because they like to attack,” he added.

Morocco forced extra time after Issa Diop scored a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser following Cody Gakpo’s second-half opener for the Netherlands.

The North Africans eventually held their nerve during the penalty shootout to book a place in the Round of 16.

Morocco will now face co-hosts Canada, who defeated South Africa 1-0 in their own Round of 32 fixture after Stephen Eustáquio scored a stoppage-time winner.

The defeat ended the Netherlands’ World Cup campaign despite entering the knockout stage with high expectations.

Koeman has yet to respond publicly to Ibrahimovic’s criticism, while Morocco continue their historic run as they prepare for Saturday’s last-16 clash against Canada in Houston.
