WhatsApp Replaces Phone Numbers with Usernames in New Privacy Update
WhatsApp has introduced username reservations, allowing users to connect without sharing phone numbers. The new privacy-focused feature also includes an optional username key for added protection against unwanted messages.
WhatsApp has begun rolling out username reservations as part of a major privacy update that will allow users to connect without sharing their phone numbers.
The messaging platform announced on Monday that the reservation process officially commenced on June 29, ahead of the full public launch of the feature later this year.
According to WhatsApp, eligible users will receive in-app notifications once the option to reserve a username becomes available on their accounts.
The new feature is designed to enhance user privacy by enabling communication through unique usernames instead of personal phone numbers, particularly when interacting with new contacts.
WhatsApp explained that the update gives users greater control over how they are identified on the platform while reducing the need to disclose their mobile numbers during conversations.
Unlike traditional social media platforms, WhatsApp said it will not operate a public directory or provide username suggestions, making it more difficult for strangers to locate users.
The company noted that anyone wishing to initiate a conversation with a user for the first time must already know the person’s exact username.
To further strengthen security, WhatsApp is also introducing an optional “username key” feature.
The additional layer of protection will require first-time contacts to enter a unique security key before they can send a message, helping users prevent unwanted or unsolicited conversations.
Explaining the early reservation process, WhatsApp said the move was necessary because of the platform’s massive global user base.
“Starting this week, you can reserve a username to use later this year when we launch this feature.
“With over three billion people on WhatsApp, many names overlap. That’s why we’re opening reservations early to give everyone an opportunity to secure the username that matters to them,” the company said.
The introduction of usernames marks one of WhatsApp’s most significant privacy-focused updates in recent years, reflecting growing demand for stronger identity protection and safer communication online.
Industry observers believe the feature could also make WhatsApp more attractive for users who prefer to separate their personal phone numbers from public or business interactions.
The rollout is expected to continue gradually across devices and regions over the coming months before the complete username system becomes available worldwide later in the year.
