The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has appealed to residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to support efforts aimed at safeguarding critical national infrastructure by promptly reporting acts of vandalism and suspicious activities.

The FCT Commandant of the Corps, Dr. Olusola Odumosu, made the appeal in Abuja on Monday, warning that the destruction of public infrastructure poses a serious threat to national development and undermines government investments in essential facilities.

Odumosu stressed that protecting public assets should not be left to security agencies alone, describing it as a collective responsibility that requires active participation from members of the public. He urged residents to provide timely and credible intelligence that would assist security operatives in preventing attacks on strategic infrastructure across the territory.

According to him, many residents often ignore incidents of vandalism occurring in their communities instead of alerting the relevant authorities.

“Many people turn a blind eye when acts of vandalism occur around them. Residents must be proactive and promptly report such incidents through our emergency hotlines,” he said.

The commandant disclosed that the Corps has intensified surveillance across the FCT to ensure the safety of critical infrastructure, including electricity installations, communication equipment and other public facilities.

“We are maintaining round-the-clock surveillance across the territory, and anyone apprehended for vandalising public infrastructure will be prosecuted in accordance with the law,” he added.

Odumosu also issued a warning to individuals involved in vandalism, advising them to abandon such criminal activities or face legal consequences.

In addition, he cautioned operators of Private Guard Companies against operating with fake, expired or invalid licences, revealing that the command would soon begin enforcement actions against defaulting firms.

He advised affected security companies to regularise their documentation immediately to avoid arrest, prosecution or the closure of their businesses.

The renewed warning comes amid growing concerns over the increasing destruction and theft of public infrastructure in different parts of Nigeria. Across the country, vandals have continued to target electricity facilities, telecommunications equipment, oil pipelines, railway infrastructure and other strategic national assets.

Security experts have repeatedly warned that such criminal activities not only result in huge economic losses but also disrupt essential public services and slow down development efforts. The NSCDC reiterated its commitment to protecting critical infrastructure and called on residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies to preserve public assets.
