According to reports, Ceferin's absence from the showpiece event reflected growing dissatisfaction with FIFA's governance and what UEFA views as increasing political interference in football.

The dispute reportedly intensified after FIFA suspended the automatic one-match ban issued to United States forward Folarin Balogun following his red card earlier in the tournament.
