Youths from Nsukka in Enugu State have stormed the national headquarters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) to protest alleged plans to impose candidates during the party’s primaries, warning that such moves would be resisted.
Youths from Nsukka Senatorial District in Enugu State have stormed the national headquarters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) to register their opposition to any form of candidate imposition during the party’s primaries.
The youths, who arrived at the party secretariat in large numbers on Tuesday, expressed concern over reports that some individuals were attempting to handpick candidates for various elective positions without going through a transparent primary process.
Speaking on behalf of the group, the youths warned that they would not accept any candidate imposed on them, insisting that the party must conduct free, fair and credible primaries that reflect the wishes of the people.
They stated that the era of imposition was over and that the youth of Nsukka were ready to resist any attempt to undermine internal democracy within the NDC.
The protesters also called on the party’s national leadership to ensure that all aspirants are given a level playing field and that the primaries are conducted in accordance with the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act.
They further urged the party to respect the zoning arrangement in the senatorial district, stressing that any deviation from the established formula would be rejected.
The youths said they were prepared to mobilise massively to ensure that only candidates who emerged through a credible process would receive their support in the 2027 general elections.
The development comes amid heightened political activities in Enugu State and across the country, as political parties begin preparations for the 2027 elections.
As of the time of this report, the leadership of the NDC had not issued an official response to the protest by the Nsukka youths.
