Baze University, Abuja, has established the Chancellor’s Annual Excellence Awards, a new institutional honours programme designed to recognise and reward exceptional contributions to teaching, research, scholarship and postgraduate supervision.

The decision was approved at a meeting of the university’s Board of Trustees chaired by the Founder and Chancellor, Senator Datti Baba Ahmed, as part of efforts to strengthen the institution’s research ecosystem and build a globally competitive university.

The awards will initially comprise two flagship categories: the Chancellor’s Prize for the Best PhD Supervisor of the Year and the Chancellor’s Prize for the Best Published Academic Staff Member of the Year.

The Chancellor’s Prize for the Best PhD Supervisor of the Year will honour academic staff who demonstrate exceptional commitment to postgraduate mentorship, timely supervision, scholarly guidance and the successful development of doctoral researchers.

The university said the award recognises that the quality of doctoral supervision is central to the production of future scholars, researchers and innovators, and remains one of the defining indicators of a world-class university.

The Chancellor’s Prize for the Best Published Academic Staff Member of the Year will recognise scholars whose research output demonstrates exceptional quality, originality, visibility and influence in their fields.

The prizes will be presented annually during the university’s Convocation Ceremony or on any other occasion approved by the Chancellor.

University officials noted that such awards are recognised internationally as powerful instruments for nurturing a culture of excellence, motivating staff and strengthening institutional reputation by demonstrating that outstanding performance is identified, celebrated and rewarded.

The Chancellor’s Annual Excellence Awards are expected to become one of Baze University’s most distinguished academic traditions, recognising scholars whose work exemplifies originality, intellectual rigour, professional integrity and measurable impact on knowledge creation.

The move aligns with previous initiatives by the university to reward academic excellence, including substantial cash prizes and fully funded PhD scholarships or employment offers for top graduating and postgraduate students.

By institutionalising annual recognition for outstanding PhD supervision and high-impact publications, Baze University aims to further incentivise research productivity, improve postgraduate training and enhance its standing among Nigerian and African universities.
