Northern Stakeholders Back Obi’s One-Term Presidency Proposal
Northern political stakeholders have expressed support for Peter Obi’s one-term presidency proposal, describing it as a confidence-building measure capable of promoting national unity, inclusion and political stability.
A growing number of northern political stakeholders have thrown their weight behind the one-term presidency proposal put forward by Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, describing it as a practical approach to fostering national unity and strengthening political inclusion ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The supporters argued that Obi’s commitment to serve only one term if elected president reflects a willingness to place national interest above personal political ambition at a time when debates surrounding power rotation and equitable representation continue to shape Nigeria’s political discourse.
According to them, the proposal serves as a confidence-building measure aimed at reassuring regions concerned about political balance and leadership succession.
They maintained that the arrangement could help promote broader national consensus by providing a predictable framework for leadership transition that accommodates the interests of both northern and southern political blocs.
Many of Obi’s supporters also described the initiative as a rare example of political compromise in Nigeria’s highly competitive political environment, where power struggles often dominate electoral contests.
One of Obi’s northern advocates, Ibrahim Hussaini Abdulkarin, said public scepticism toward political promises was understandable but cautioned against assuming that all politicians would fail to honour their commitments.
He argued that Obi’s reputation for prudence, consistency and accountability in public service distinguished him from many contemporary political figures and gave supporters confidence that he would fulfil his pledge if elected.
Within sections of the Kwankwasiyya movement, the proposal is reportedly being viewed as a possible foundation for a broader political alliance that could reshape the nation’s political landscape ahead of the next election cycle.
Supporters of the idea believe a strategic understanding between Obi and influential northern political leaders could help strengthen national cohesion and encourage leadership transitions through consensus rather than political confrontation.
They further described the proposal as more than an electoral promise, saying it reflects a broader vision for inclusive governance and national development.
Speaking on the issue, Dr. Muhammad Hamisu, Kano State Coordinator of Kwankwasiyya Diaspora, said many northerners regard Obi as a credible and trustworthy leader capable of honouring his commitment.
According to him, confidence in Obi stems from the belief that leadership founded on justice, fairness, accountability and inclusion offers the most viable pathway to sustainable national development.
The endorsement adds to growing political discussions surrounding possible alliances and power-sharing arrangements as parties and stakeholders begin positioning for the 2027 presidential election.
