Momodu Claims 2027 Race Between Tinubu, Atiku, Rules Out Obi, Others

Veteran journalist and politician, Dele Momodu, has predicted that the 2027 presidential election will be a direct contest between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, dismissing the chances of other opposition candidates emerging as major contenders.

Momodu made the assertion in a statement titled “Time for National Reconciliation, Re-Orientation & Reconstruction,” which he shared on his X account on Monday.

According to him, Nigeria’s political landscape is gradually taking the shape of a two-horse race, with Tinubu and Atiku positioned as the dominant figures ahead of the 2027 general election.

“The 2027 Presidential election is expected to be a major fight between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his biggest challenger, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. It promises to be the battle of the Titans,” he stated.

While acknowledging that a third-force movement could emerge as it did during the 2023 election, Momodu argued that such a platform would likely lack the political strength, structure and momentum required to defeat the two leading contenders.

His comments are widely seen as downplaying the prospects of Peter Obi and other Southern opposition figures who may seek to challenge for the presidency in 2027.

Beyond electoral calculations, Momodu called on the African Democratic Congress to position itself as a platform capable of fostering national unity by bringing together experienced political leaders and technocrats.

He also expressed concern over rising ethnic and religious divisions in the country, warning that such tensions could complicate the political environment if not properly addressed.

Momodu urged political actors to focus more on national development, reconciliation and issue-based campaigns as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
