Ghana Equals Super Eagles’ Record of Six World Cup Wins After Panama Victory

Ghana have equalled Nigeria’s record of six FIFA World Cup victories following their dramatic 1-0 win over Panama in their opening Group L fixture at the 2026 tournament.

The Black Stars secured the historic victory through Caleb Yirenkyi’s stoppage-time goal, which came in the 95th minute at the Toronto Stadium in Canada.

The result made Ghana only the second African country to record six wins in World Cup history, joining Nigeria, who previously held the record among African teams.

Ghana have now won six of their 16 World Cup matches, matching Nigeria’s tally of six victories achieved across 21 games in the competition.

The two West African rivals remain ahead of other African nations in terms of total World Cup wins, with Cameroon occupying third place after recording five victories from 26 matches.

Ghana’s victory came in a tightly contested encounter against Panama, with both teams struggling to create clear chances for much of the game.

The Black Stars eventually found the breakthrough in the closing moments when Yirenkyi bundled in the winning goal to send Ghanaian supporters into celebration.

The achievement further highlights Ghana’s growing legacy at football’s biggest tournament. The country has made notable appearances at previous World Cups, including reaching the quarter-finals in the 2010 edition hosted by South Africa.

Nigeria and Ghana have historically been among Africa’s strongest representatives at the World Cup, producing memorable performances against top football nations.

With their latest victory, Ghana have moved closer to securing progress in the expanded 2026 World Cup format, while also strengthening their position among Africa’s most successful teams in the competition.

The Black Stars will now focus on their remaining group matches as they aim to continue their impressive campaign and create more history at the tournament.
