World Cup: South Africa Fight Back to Hold Czechia to 1-1 Draw
South Africa recovered from an early setback to earn a 1-1 draw against Czechia at the 2026 World Cup, with Teboho Mokoena’s penalty securing a crucial point.
South Africa staged a late comeback to secure a valuable 1-1 draw against Czechia in their Group A encounter at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Czechia made a fast start and took the lead in the sixth minute through Michal Sadílek, who completed a well-coordinated attacking move to put his side ahead.
The early goal forced South Africa to increase their attacking efforts as Bafana Bafana searched for an equaliser.
However, Czechia remained dangerous on the counter-attack and created several opportunities to extend their advantage before the interval.
South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams played a key role in keeping his team in the contest, making important saves to prevent Czechia from taking greater control of the match.
The pressure eventually paid off for South Africa when they were awarded a penalty in the 81st minute.
Teboho Mokoena took responsibility from the spot and calmly converted in the 83rd minute to level the score.
Czechia responded by pushing forward in search of a late winner, but South Africa’s defence held firm to secure a crucial point.
The final whistle confirmed a 1-1 draw, leaving both teams still competing for qualification from Group A.
For South Africa, the result provided a much-needed lift after their opening defeat in the tournament, while Czechia were left frustrated after failing to convert their earlier chances.
The Bafana Bafana will now turn their attention to their remaining group fixtures as they continue their quest to advance to the knockout stage of the expanded 2026 World Cup.
