Santos Backs Real Madrid Signing of Bernardo Silva

Former Portugal head coach Fernando Santos has praised Real Madrid’s acquisition of Bernardo Silva, describing the experienced midfielder as one of the finest footballers he has ever worked with both on and off the pitch.

Silva completed a free transfer to the Spanish giants last month after bringing an end to his successful nine-year spell at Manchester City.

The 31-year-old joined Real Madrid following an outstanding career at the Etihad Stadium, where he scored 76 goals in 460 appearances across all competitions while helping City win 19 major trophies, including six Premier League titles.

Silva also featured for Portugal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The midfielder came close to rescuing his country during their Round of 16 clash against eventual champions Spain but headed a late opportunity over the crossbar as Portugal suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat.

Speaking about his former player, Santos highlighted Silva’s exceptional football intelligence and personal qualities, insisting Real Madrid have secured one of the world’s best midfielders.

“As a footballer, Bernardo Silva is well-known. He possesses immense quality and perceives the game in a way that very few players can,” Santos said.

The veteran coach, who managed Portugal between 2014 and 2022, also praised Silva’s professionalism and character, describing him as one of the most remarkable individuals he encountered during his managerial career.

“He is attentive, courteous, kind and consistently wears a smile. On a personal and human level, he ranks among the finest footballers I have encountered throughout my career. Real Madrid has acquired a phenomenon in every aspect,” he added.

Santos also dismissed suggestions that Silva’s best years are behind him, insisting the midfielder remains at the peak of his career despite turning 31.

According to him, Silva still has several seasons at the highest level and possesses the quality to become a key figure in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad.

“Based on my observations this season at City, I would assert that he remains at his best. I know him very well, and I am confident that he has many excellent years ahead,” Santos said.

Silva has signed a two-year contract with Real Madrid and is expected to strengthen the club’s midfield as Los Blancos prepare for another campaign in La Liga and the UEFA Champions League.
