Trump Seeks Resignation of US Ambassador to Greece Over Misconduct Allegations
US President Donald Trump has asked Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign following allegations that she offered access to senior administration officials in exchange for financial favours. Guilfoyle has denied wrongdoing and vowed to defend her reputation.
United States President Donald Trump has asked the country’s Ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, to resign following reports alleging misconduct during her diplomatic service.
White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia announced the decision on Tuesday, saying the administration had asked Guilfoyle to step down while acknowledging her contributions to the government.
The development followed reports alleging that Guilfoyle sought financial assistance from a political donor in exchange for access to senior officials in the Trump administration.
One allegation centres on a reported request for a donor to pay a $100,000 credit card bill shortly before her Senate confirmation hearing in 2025. The reports claimed she offered to use her connections within the administration to assist the donor with certain matters.
Guilfoyle’s lawyers have disputed the allegations, maintaining that the money sought was payment for previous public appearances and speaking engagements. They have also rejected claims of improper conduct relating to her travel and official responsibilities.
The controversy has prompted scrutiny of Guilfoyle’s activities in Athens, including allegations that she promoted the interests of a Greek energy company and allowed a lobbyist associated with the firm to attend private diplomatic meetings.
Other reports alleged that she made threats involving US influence over the Greek government. The allegations have drawn calls for further investigation, while the State Department’s inspector general has been reported to be examining complaints concerning her conduct.
Trump had indicated on Monday that he was considering removing Guilfoyle, saying his administration was dissatisfied with what had been reported. On Tuesday, he told reporters that she had been doing a good job but that the administration was concerned by the allegations.
Guilfoyle, a former prosecutor and television personality who was previously engaged to Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr., denied the accusations in a statement posted on social media.
She described serving as ambassador as a significant honour, saying she remained committed to the United States and the administration’s agenda. She added that the allegations were false and that she intended to defend her name, reputation and integrity.
Guilfoyle’s departure comes as the United States continues to strengthen diplomatic and security cooperation with Greece, a NATO ally that provides strategic military facilities in the eastern Mediterranean.
The allegations remain contested, and Guilfoyle has not admitted wrongdoing.
