‘You’re a Massive Problem for Portugal’ — Nicky Butt Warns Ronaldo After DR Congo Draw
Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt has warned Portugal manager Roberto Martinez that Cristiano Ronaldo could become a major challenge for the team following his quiet performance against DR Congo.
Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt has claimed that Portugal manager Roberto Martinez faces a “massive problem” with Cristiano Ronaldo following the veteran forward’s subdued performance in their 1-1 draw against the Democratic Republic of Congo at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ronaldo, who is now 41, failed to make a significant impact as Portugal were held by DR Congo in their second group fixture, raising questions about his influence and role in the team.
Despite the disappointing display, Martinez defended his decision not to substitute the Al Nassr striker during the match, instead suggesting that Portugal needed to provide better support and service to their leading attacker.
However, Butt argued that Ronaldo’s personality and status could create difficulties for the Portugal manager.
Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, the former England international said Ronaldo’s strong personality and influence could become a challenge within the squad.
“I think he’s got that much of an ego, Cristiano. He’s a great lad but he’s got such an ego and he’ll be a massive problem for that squad,” Butt said.
He added that Ronaldo’s second spell at Manchester United showed similar concerns, describing his return to the club as a difficult situation.
Butt also pointed out the pressure Martinez faces from Portugal supporters, many of whom remain deeply loyal to Ronaldo.
“If you look at the fans for Portugal’s draw with DR Congo, they had around 20,000 Portuguese fans and I reckon 18,000 had ‘Ronaldo 7’ on their back so you’ve also got that to deal with as a manager as well,” he said.
Martinez, however, maintained that Ronaldo remains an important part of Portugal’s attacking plans.
“We have to utilise all the players on the pitch. The lead attacker needs to be close to the six-yard box and we need to get the ball to him,” the coach said.
Portugal will now look to improve their performances as they continue their World Cup campaign, with Ronaldo remaining one of the team’s most influential figures.
