Canada Thrash Nine-Man Qatar as David Scores Historic World Cup Hat-Trick

Jonathan David produced a stunning performance as Canada recorded their first-ever FIFA World Cup victory with a convincing win over nine-man Qatar at BC Place Vancouver.

The 2026 co-hosts secured a comfortable victory after David’s hat-trick inspired the team to a memorable night in front of their home supporters.

The result moved Canada to four points in the group and placed them on the verge of reaching the knockout stage of the tournament.

Canada coach Jesse Marsch had urged his players and fans to make their presence felt against Qatar, and his team responded with an impressive attacking display.

Cyle Larin opened the scoring after converting a rebound, continuing his fine form after also finding the net in Canada’s previous match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Qatar’s chances of mounting a comeback suffered a major blow when Homan Ahmed was shown a red card for a challenge on Tajon Buchanan before David doubled Canada’s advantage shortly before half-time.

The situation became even worse for Qatar after Assim Madibo was dismissed following a challenge on Ismael Kone, leaving the team with only nine players.

Canada took full advantage of their numerical superiority, with Nathan Saliba scoring from a free-kick before Mohamed Manai turned the ball into his own net.

David completed his hat-trick late in the match to seal a historic victory for Canada.

The striker became the first player to score a World Cup hat-trick on home soil since England’s Geoff Hurst achieved the feat in 1966.

David was also named the Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match for his outstanding contribution.

After the game, Canada forward Cyle Larin praised the team’s performance, saying the players had shown their quality and determination on football’s biggest stage.

“We showed the world who Canada is. We showed the fight we have in us and that we can perform on the world stage,” Larin said.
