Uncertainty Clouds Reported Release of Abducted Victims in Igboho, Oyo State
Reports of abducted victims being released in Igboho, Oyo State remain unclear, as security agencies deny any confirmed rescue while local claims suggest otherwise, leaving the situation unresolved and surrounded by conflicting narratives.
Confusion continues to surround reports that victims abducted in Igboho, Oorelope Local Government Area of Oyo State, have regained their freedom, as conflicting accounts from security agencies, local authorities, and community sources leave the true situation unclear.
The controversy emerged after reports circulated on social media claiming that a woman, her children, and a relative who were abducted by suspected kidnappers had been released shortly after Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, issued a two-hour ultimatum demanding their freedom.
The reports sparked celebrations in parts of Igboho, with videos showing residents rejoicing over what many believed was the successful release of the victims. However, the Oyo State Police Command and Oorelope Local Government authorities have challenged those claims, insisting there is no official confirmation that the abductees have been freed.
In a statement, Oorelope Local Government Chairman Jacob Ogundiran described reports of the victims' release as false and misleading, maintaining that efforts to secure their freedom were still ongoing. The council chairman urged residents to rely only on information from credible and official sources.
The police also dismissed suggestions that Sunday Igboho played a role in any rescue operation. According to the command, there is no verified evidence linking the activist to the alleged release, while authorities insist that no official confirmation of the victims' freedom has been made.
The uncertainty comes against the backdrop of growing insecurity in parts of Oyo State. Earlier reports indicated that the victims were abducted during an attack in Igboho, with kidnappers allegedly demanding huge ransom payments. The incident generated widespread outrage, particularly following allegations that a pregnant woman and a person delivering ransom money were killed during negotiations.
While supporters of Sunday Igboho claim his intervention and ultimatum pressured the kidnappers, security agencies maintain that the narrative remains unverified. As a result, questions persist over whether the victims were truly released, who facilitated their freedom if they were, and what role, if any, was played by non-state actors.
For now, the fate of the abductees remains the subject of conflicting narratives. Until a comprehensive official account is provided by security authorities, uncertainty is likely to continue surrounding one of the most closely watched kidnapping cases in Oyo State in recent months.
