Captain Ndidi Offers Candid Assessment After Super Eagles Share Spoils in Warsaw
Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi gave an honest review of Nigeria's entertaining 2-2 draw with Poland, praising their first-half dominance before a late long-range strike denied them victory in Warsaw.
Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has provided an honest breakdown of Nigeria’s thrilling 2-2 draw with Poland, acknowledging that while the team controlled proceedings in the opening 45 minutes, they adopted a more conservative approach after the interval.
The Beşiktaş midfielder returned to the starting lineup after sitting out Nigeria’s recent Unity Cup matches in London. He wore the captain's armband at the PGE Narodowy Stadium in Warsaw on Wednesday evening.
Notably, Ndidi was the sole Nigerian player on the pitch who had also featured in the Super Eagles' 1-0 win over Poland in Wrocław eight years ago. He played the entire match alongside goalkeeper Maduka Okoye and debutant Abdullahi Bewene.
Despite taking the lead twice during the international friendly, Eric Chelle’s side were pegged back by a late Polish equaliser. Speaking in the mixed zone post-match, Ndidi highlighted the tactical shift between the two halves.
"It was a brilliant game," Ndidi told reporters. "We completely dominated the first half, which was amazing. In the second half, we tried to sit back a little more to defend and press. Overall, it was a very positive performance."
Nigeria opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Ndidi drove forward to find Moses Simon, whose low cross was converted by Terem Moffi. Although initially flagged for offside, the goal was validated following a VAR review.
Poland hit back in first-half stoppage time when 18-year-old Kacper Potulski converted from a corner. Coach Chelle made a flurry of substitutions at halftime, and Nigeria eventually reclaimed the lead in the 80th minute when Paul Onuachu coolly converted a penalty following a handball.
However, a spectacular long-range rocket from Polish defender Przemysław Wiśniewski in the dying minutes sealed the 2-2 draw. Despite missing out on the win, the result means Chelle's incredible unbeaten run now stands at 23 matches in regulation time.
