Man City Agree To Sign Enzo Fernandez For Record £125m — Reports

Manchester City have agreed a £125 million deal to sign Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, in a blockbuster move that matches the British transfer record.

The Argentina international is set to leave Chelsea after more than three years at Stamford Bridge, with the agreement reached on transfer deadline day following weeks of uncertainty surrounding his future.

The £125 million fee matches the British record set when Liverpool signed Alexander Isak from Newcastle United in 2025. It also makes Fernandez one of the most expensive footballers in the history of the game.

Fernandez joined Chelsea from Benfica in January 2023 for a reported £106.8 million, which was then a British-record transfer fee. He went on to become an important figure in Chelsea’s midfield, making more than 170 appearances for the club.

The 25-year-old enjoyed an impressive 2025/26 campaign, scoring 15 goals and providing seven assists across competitions. He also remained an important player for Argentina during their international campaign.

His move to Manchester City will see him reunite with manager Enzo Maresca, who previously coached him at Chelsea. The relationship between the pair is understood to have played an important role in Fernandez’s desire to join City.

Fernandez had expressed his wish to leave Chelsea earlier in the summer, while the club had initially set a deadline for interested clubs to submit offers. Manchester City did not make a formal move before that deadline but returned with a major bid as the transfer window approached its conclusion.

Chelsea had left Fernandez out of their last two matchday squads amid uncertainty over his future. Manager Xabi Alonso had previously stressed the importance of having players who were fully committed to the club.

For Manchester City, the deal represents another major investment in their midfield as they look to strengthen their squad and challenge for the Premier League title.

City have already spent heavily during the summer transfer window, bringing in several midfield players as part of a major squad rebuild.

Fernandez’s departure, meanwhile, leaves Chelsea with limited time to find a replacement before the transfer window closes.

The deal is expected to be completed after Fernandez undergoes his medical and final formalities are concluded.

The transfer marks a dramatic turnaround for Fernandez, who is now set to make another record-breaking move after becoming Chelsea’s most expensive signing in 2023.
