Germany Defender Rudiger Announces International Retirement

Germany defender Antonio Rudiger has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to his national team career after 86 appearances.

The 33-year-old Real Madrid centre-back made the decision two months after representing Germany at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Rudiger said he had taken time to reflect before deciding to step away from international football and allow younger players to take his place.

“After some time reflecting, the moment has come for me to end my national team career and clear the way for the young generation,” he said.

The defender made his Germany debut in 2014, shortly before the country won the World Cup in Brazil. However, he was not selected for the tournament squad.

Rudiger subsequently established himself as a key member of Germany’s defence and became one of the country’s most experienced players.

He said his decision would allow him to concentrate fully on his club career with Real Madrid, where he remains under contract for the rest of the season.

“A new chapter begins for me now, in which I will focus entirely on my club,” Rudiger said.

Born in Berlin, Rudiger developed through the youth systems of Borussia Dortmund and Stuttgart before beginning his senior career and later moving to Italy to join Roma.

He moved to Chelsea in 2017 and enjoyed a successful spell in England, winning the UEFA Champions League in 2021.

Rudiger joined Real Madrid in 2022 and added more major honours to his collection, including the Champions League and La Liga titles in 2024.

His international career, however, coincided with a difficult period for Germany.

The four-time world champions suffered consecutive group-stage exits at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups before another disappointing campaign in 2026.

Germany were eliminated in the last 32 by Paraguay, with the match becoming Rudiger’s final appearance for the national team.

Reflecting on his international journey, Rudiger acknowledged that Germany had experienced painful defeats and failed to win a major title during his later years with the team.

“Even though the big title eluded us in recent tournaments and we had to endure some painful defeats, this time was an incredibly special chapter for me—one that will shape me forever,” he said.

Rudiger leaves the national team having established himself as an important figure in German football while also enjoying a decorated club career across Italy, England and Spain.
