BREAKING: Ex-Army Spokesperson, General Rabe, Dies In Bandits’ Captivity

Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, former Defence Information Director, has died in bandits’ captivity in Katsina State, with government attributing his death to health complications during abduction.

The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information (DDI), while in the custody of bandits, describing the incident as a tragic loss to his family, the state, and Nigeria.

According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Muazu, the retired senior military officer died while still in captivity despite ongoing efforts to secure his release.

The government explained that both the state authorities and security agencies made extensive attempts to negotiate and facilitate his safe return, but those efforts were unsuccessful.

“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity. Despite the relentless and concerted efforts of the State Government and various security agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in this tragedy,” the statement said.

The government further disclosed that the late officer died from complications related to diabetes and hypertension during his period in captivity.

His death comes only days after he and his abducted wife appeared in a viral video, where he was seen pleading with authorities to meet the demands of the kidnappers in exchange for their release. The video had sparked widespread concern across the country and renewed calls for stronger security intervention in kidnapping cases.

Rabe Abubakar was widely respected within military and security circles for his role in defence communications and public information management during his service years.

The Katsina State Government described his passing as a major national loss, noting that it underscores the persistent security challenges facing parts of northern Nigeria.

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda expressed condolences to the family of the deceased, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the urgent need to strengthen security coordination and improve responses to kidnapping and banditry across the country.

He also reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to working with federal authorities and security agencies to combat insecurity and prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The incident has further intensified public concern over rising cases of abductions and the safety of high-profile individuals and civilians in affected regions.
