Beware of Obi, His Supporters, Abure Advises Dickson to Learn from LP Crisis
Julius Abure has warned Seriake Dickson to be cautious in his alliance with Peter Obi, saying the NDC should avoid mistakes that contributed to the Labour Party’s post-election crisis.
Factional Labour Party leader Julius Abure has cautioned National Democratic Congress (NDC) leader, Seriake Dickson, to be careful in his political relationship with Peter Obi and his supporters, warning that the party could face challenges similar to those experienced by the Labour Party after the 2023 general election.
Abure issued the warning in a statement signed on Monday, following Obi’s emergence as the NDC presidential candidate after his ratification at the party’s national convention in Abuja on May 30.
According to Abure, Dickson appears to have learned from the internal crisis that affected the Labour Party, particularly by reportedly avoiding the transfer of all elective positions in the NDC to Obi’s supporters.
He argued that political parties should maintain control of their leadership structures, claiming that some politicians elected on the Labour Party platform later became involved in disputes with the party leadership after securing office.
Abure alleged that the Labour Party made significant concessions ahead of the 2023 elections by accommodating Obi’s interests and granting tickets to many of his supporters, some of whom received them without charge.
The former LP chairman further claimed that the party’s internal crisis worsened after electoral and legal developments led to disputes over the tenure of party executives and the emergence of an interim leadership structure.
He advised Dickson to ensure that trusted party loyalists occupy key positions within the NDC in order to protect the party’s leadership and organisational stability.
Abure also accused Obi and some of his supporters of failing to appreciate the sacrifices made by the Labour Party leadership during the 2023 election cycle, describing the experience as a lesson for other political parties entering alliances ahead of future elections.
