Suspected bandits have killed a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer during an attack on Odo-Ere in Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, while his abducted daughter later escaped from captivity.

The attack occurred on Monday evening when the gunmen reportedly invaded the community and shot the officer, identified simply as Mr. Ayo, in the head.

Sources said the NSCDC officer was rushed to a medical facility after the attack but was confirmed dead on arrival. His remains have since been deposited in a mortuary.

The assailants reportedly abducted the victim’s first daughter and fled into a nearby bush, causing panic among residents already concerned about rising insecurity in the area.

However, the abducted daughter reportedly escaped from the kidnappers’ hideout in the early hours of Tuesday and returned safely to her family.

Her return sparked celebrations across the community as residents welcomed the news of her escape.

“Mr Ayo, who was shot in the head, died instantly while the daughter was whisked away into the bush. However, luck smiled at the daughter as she managed to escape from the bandits’ hideout and has since been reunited with the family,” a community source said.

Security agencies have since launched an investigation into the incident and intensified efforts to track down those responsible for the attack.

A police source disclosed that tactical teams have begun a manhunt for the perpetrators.

“Investigation has commenced as the tactical team of the security agencies has launched a massive manhunt to apprehend the perpetrators,” the source said.

The incident adds to growing concerns over insecurity in parts of Kogi State, where residents have continued to call for stronger security measures to tackle banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes.
