World Cup: ‘I’m Really Disappointed’ — Stuart Pearce Slams Arsenal Star After England’s Win Over DR Congo
Former England coach Stuart Pearce criticised Arsenal winger Noni Madueke after England’s comeback victory over DR Congo, accusing him of fading in the second half and taking the easy option.
Former England coach Stuart Pearce has criticised Arsenal winger Noni Madueke following England’s dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Three Lions were on the brink of a shock elimination after Brian Cipenga handed DR Congo an early lead, which they protected for more than an hour.
However, England captain Harry Kane rescued Thomas Tuchel’s side with two late goals, first heading home Anthony Gordon’s cross before scoring the winner to seal qualification for the Round of 16.
The victory earned England a last-16 showdown with co-hosts Mexico at the Azteca Stadium, but concerns remain over the team’s overall performance.
Many observers believe England must improve significantly if they hope to challenge tournament favourites such as France, Argentina and Brazil for the World Cup title.
Madueke was among the players singled out for criticism after an underwhelming display.
The former Chelsea winger started the match but was substituted by Bukayo Saka with 30 minutes remaining after struggling to make an impact in the second half.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Pearce said he was disappointed with the Arsenal player’s display after an encouraging start.
“I’ve got to say I was really disappointed with Noni Madueke,” Pearce said.
“I was impressed by him in the first half, I thought he was outstanding at times. But in the second half, I think he took the easy option, got tired and gave up.”
Saka, who replaced Madueke, returned after arriving at the World Cup with concerns over his fitness.
The Arsenal star is currently ahead of Madueke in manager Mikel Arteta’s pecking order at club level and is expected to play a key role as England prepare for their crucial clash against Mexico.
England will be hoping for an improved performance against the tournament co-hosts as they continue their bid to win a first World Cup title in 60 years.
