2026 World Cup: England in Big Trouble Ahead of Mexico Clash — Rooney

Former England captain Wayne Rooney has expressed concern over the Three Lions’ chances of winning the 2026 FIFA World Cup, warning that Thomas Tuchel’s side could struggle against stronger opponents after their narrow victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Rooney made the remarks while analysing England’s 2-1 comeback win over DR Congo during the BBC’s post-match coverage on Wednesday.

England fell behind early in the Round of 32 clash after Brian Cipenga scored in the seventh minute, leaving Tuchel’s men chasing the game for most of the encounter.

Captain Harry Kane eventually rescued the Three Lions with two late goals, completing the turnaround and securing England’s place in the Round of 16.

Despite the victory, Rooney believes England’s defensive frailties could prove costly against tougher opposition, beginning with their upcoming clash against co-hosts Mexico.

“For me there are big concerns,” Rooney said.

“We are all delighted England have gone through, but particularly when England lose the ball they are so open.

“Against a better team I think we are in big trouble if we don’t sort that out.”

The former Manchester United striker pointed to the lack of cohesion between England’s defence and midfield, describing the gaps in the team’s structure as a major weakness.

“The connection isn’t great between the backline and midfield. The full-backs are struggling, Noni Madueke struggled.

“There are just no connections and big gaps in the middle of the pitch and that is a big worry for me,” he added.

Rooney urged Tuchel to address the tactical issues before England face Mexico, warning that failure to improve could end their World Cup campaign.

“He really needs to look at that, otherwise we will go out,” Rooney said.

England will face Mexico on Monday for a place in the quarter-finals.

The co-hosts have emerged as one of the tournament’s most impressive teams, winning all four of their matches without conceding a goal.

Should England overcome Mexico, they are expected to face Brazil in the quarter-finals, setting up one of the tournament’s biggest potential encounters.
