2026 World Cup: Why We Lost 3-2 to Belgium — Senegal Coach Thiaw

Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw has admitted his side’s determination to protect a two-goal advantage ultimately contributed to their dramatic 3-2 defeat to Belgium in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Teranga Lions appeared to be on course for a place in the last 16 after goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr handed them a commanding 2-0 lead.

However, Belgium mounted a remarkable comeback in the closing stages of regulation time.

Romelu Lukaku reduced the deficit before Youri Tielemans scored the equaliser late in the second half to force the match into extra time.

With the contest seemingly heading for a penalty shoot-out, Belgium were awarded a decisive spot-kick in the closing moments of extra time.

Tielemans calmly converted from the penalty spot to complete the comeback and send Belgium into the Round of 16.

Reflecting on the defeat, Thiaw said Senegal lost control of the match after becoming too focused on defending their lead instead of maintaining their attacking approach.

“We had the match in hand, winning 2-0, and then we backed off a little towards the end; we wanted to hold onto the score,” Thiaw said.

“Once we conceded 2-1, we retreated even more and they scored their second goal.”

The Senegal coach acknowledged the emotional challenge of lifting his players after Belgium’s equaliser but praised their commitment throughout the contest.

“It wasn’t easy; we tried to lift their spirits and bring more energy to the team.

“It’s not easy because they gave it their all; we wanted to qualify for the people,” he added.

The defeat brought Senegal’s World Cup journey to an end despite an impressive performance for much of the encounter.

Belgium, meanwhile, progressed to the Round of 16 after completing one of the most dramatic comebacks of the tournament and will now continue their quest for World Cup glory.
