World Cup 2026: France Will Win — Haaland On Rivalry With Mbappe, Messi For Golden Boot
Erling Haaland has backed France to win the 2026 World Cup while expressing excitement over his Golden Boot battle with Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi.
Norway striker Erling Haaland has reiterated his belief that France will emerge champions of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite his own country’s impressive run to the quarter finals of the competition.
Haaland made the remarks while reflecting on his race for the tournament’s Golden Boot alongside France captain Kylian Mbappe and Argentina legend Lionel Messi.
The three football stars are currently tied as the tournament’s leading scorers, with seven goals each, setting up an intriguing contest for the prestigious individual award as the World Cup enters its decisive stages.
The Manchester City forward spoke after inspiring Norway to a memorable 2-1 victory over Brazil in the Round of 16, a result that secured his country’s place in the quarter finals.
Asked about his rivalry with Mbappe and Messi for the Golden Boot, Haaland praised both players and described the competition as one he is enjoying.
“Yes, it has been very interesting so far,” Haaland said in an interview with beIN SPORTS.
“Messi is performing at his highest level, and so is Mbappe. As I said before, I think France will win. To be honest, it is an interesting rivalry.
“I am happy to be here and to be able to perform well in the games again and again.”
Haaland’s comments come despite Norway remaining one of the surprise packages of the tournament. The Scandinavian side stunned five time world champions Brazil to reach the last eight and will now face England for a place in the semi finals.
France, meanwhile, also progressed after edging Paraguay 1-0 in the Round of 16, with Mbappe scoring the winning goal from the penalty spot. Argentina also remain in contention, with Messi continuing to play a pivotal role in his team’s quest for another World Cup title.
With the tournament approaching its closing stages, the race for the Golden Boot is expected to intensify as Haaland, Mbappe and Messi continue their battle to finish as the competition’s highest goalscorer.
