Sepp Blatter Criticizes FIFA Reversal of Folarin Balogun's Red Card Following Donald Trump's Phone Call
Former FIFA President Sepp Blatter has criticized FIFA for undermining its own integrity after the governing body lifted US forward Folarin Balogun's red card suspension ahead of a crucial knockout match. The controversial reversal followed a direct phone call from US President Donald Trump to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, a move Blatter warned turns the sport into a "playground for political power."
Former FIFA President Sepp Blatter has openly questioned the independence and integrity of world football's governing body, warning that the sport must not become a "playground for political power."
Blatter’s sharp criticism came via social media after United States President Donald Trump successfully intervened to have American star forward Folarin Balogun's automatic World Cup suspension lifted.
"Red cards are not overturned by political phone calls," Blatter wrote on X. "They are overturned by rules, evidence and independent bodies. If a U.S. President intervenes with the FIFA President, and a player is suddenly cleared before a World Cup knockout match, the question is unavoidable: Quo vadis, FIFA?"
The unprecedented drama began after the USA's 2-0 victory against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32. Balogun, who scored the opening goal, was shown a straight red card following a VAR review for an accidental but awkward challenge where his boot landed on the ankle of Tarik Muharemović.
Under standard tournament regulations, a straight red card triggers a mandatory one-match ban with no avenue for team appeal, ruling Balogun out of Monday's Round of 16 clash against Belgium.
However, media reports revealed that Trump made a direct phone call to FIFA President Gianni Infantino to complain about the decision. On Sunday, FIFA announced a highly unusual verdict: Balogun’s match suspension would be suspended for a one-year probationary period, immediately clearing him to play against Belgium. Trump subsequently posted on social media, thanking FIFA for "reversing a great injustice."
