World Cup 2026: This Will Be My Last Tournament — Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be his last, saying he will retire from international football with no regrets whatsoever.
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the final World Cup of his illustrious career, saying he is determined to enjoy every remaining moment of the competition.
The 41-year-old made the announcement while speaking to reporters on Sunday ahead of Portugal’s Round of 16 clash against Spain, bringing an end to speculation about whether he would feature at another World Cup.
Ronaldo said his focus remains on helping Portugal progress in the tournament while embracing what could be the closing chapter of his remarkable international career.
“It’s about enjoying it as much as possible,” he said.
“This will be my last World Cup, but let’s hope tomorrow isn’t my last game.”
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner said he would eventually retire from international football without any regrets because he has given everything to the game throughout his career.
“The day will come when I retire from international football. But whatever happens tomorrow, Cristiano will leave with a clear conscience, one thousand per cent, because I have given everything in football,” Ronaldo said.
The Portuguese superstar added that his motivation to continue playing is driven by passion rather than a desire to prove himself.
“I don’t need it. I have a good life, but it’s about passion. I play football because I love it. You have to enjoy every day. I’ve scored three goals at this World Cup. I’m not doing too badly, right?” he added.
Ronaldo has enjoyed another impressive campaign in the United States, Canada and Mexico, becoming the first player to score in six different FIFA World Cups after netting twice against Uzbekistan during the group stage. He also registered his first ever World Cup knockout goal after converting a penalty against Croatia in the Round of 32.
Despite never winning the FIFA World Cup, Ronaldo insisted his legacy would not depend on lifting the trophy, stressing that he is content with everything he has achieved in football.
