NiMet Warns of Widespread Flash Floods in Lagos, Ogun, and 25 Other States

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued an urgent high-risk flash flood alert spanning the first ten days of July (July 1–10, 2026), warning that torrential downpours could submerge communities across 27 states.

According to the agency’s official advisory, the heavy rainstorms recorded throughout June have left soils across the federation heavily saturated and completely unable to absorb additional groundwater. As the country transitions into the absolute peak of the annual rainy season, low-lying communities, urban centers, coastal territories, and areas with clogged drainage systems are highly vulnerable to immediate flash flooding.

The meteorological report listed the 27 vulnerable states as:

Taraba, Sokoto, Borno, Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Plateau, Adamawa, Kwara, Kogi, Oyo, Ogun, Lagos, Osun, Ekiti, Delta, Edo, Abia, Imo, Anambra, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, and Bayelsa.

NiMet further warned that the impending heavy rainfalls will likely trigger massive traffic gridlocks, temporary power outages, structural damage to bridges and public utilities, and severe waterlogging of agricultural farmlands. Citizens have been strictly advised to clear local drainage channels, secure loose property, and entirely avoid walking or driving through fast-moving floodwaters.
