State Police Won't Replace Federal Police — IGP Assures Officers Of Job Security
The Inspector-General of Police has assured officers that the proposed state police will not replace the Federal Police but will complement it. He allayed fears over job security, stressing both tiers will work in synergy to tackle Nigeria's growing insecurity.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has assured personnel of the Nigeria Police Force that the proposed establishment of state police will not replace or threaten the existence of the Federal Police.
The IGP gave the assurance while addressing concerns among officers who fear that the creation of state police structures across the country could render the Federal Police redundant or lead to massive job losses.
Speaking through a senior police official, the IGP emphasised that the proposed state police will only complement the existing federal structure, not supplant it, stressing that both tiers of policing will work in synergy to enhance security across the nation.
"Let me make it very clear to all officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force — state police will not replace the Federal Police. There is no cause for alarm. Both will exist side by side and work together to secure our nation," he assured.
He explained that the growing security challenges in the country have made it imperative to adopt a more decentralised approach to policing, noting that a single, centralised police force can no longer effectively address the diverse and complex security needs of all parts of the country.
The IGP urged officers to disregard rumours and misinformation suggesting that the introduction of state police would lead to retrenchment or affect their welfare, salaries, and career progression.
"Your jobs are secure. Your welfare remains a priority. The introduction of state police is about strengthening our collective capacity to fight crime, not about replacing anyone or rendering anyone jobless," he stated.
He further called on personnel to remain focused, disciplined, and committed to their duties, assuring them that the leadership of the Force is working tirelessly to improve their working conditions and welfare.
The debate over the establishment of state police has gained significant momentum in recent times, with many state governors, lawmakers, and security experts advocating for its adoption as a solution to the worsening insecurity across the country.
Proponents argue that state police, being closer to the grassroots, would have better local intelligence and faster response capabilities, while critics have raised concerns about possible abuse by state governors for political purposes.
The IGP, however, maintained that adequate safeguards and clear operational frameworks would be put in place to prevent any form of abuse and ensure that both the Federal and state police operate within the confines of the law.
He reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to protecting lives and property, maintaining law and order, and supporting any reform that would enhance the security and safety of all Nigerians.
The IGP's assurance is expected to calm rising anxiety within the rank and file of the Force as discussions on the proposed state police continue to dominate national discourse.
