Spain’s Defensive Masterclass Leaves Mbappé, France Dreaming of Third Place
Spain’s defensive brilliance shut out Kylian Mbappé and France in a 2-0 World Cup semi-final victory, sending La Roja into the final while Les Bleus must now
Spain produced another commanding defensive display to silence Kylian Mbappé and France, securing a 2-0 victory on Tuesday to book their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
The European champions frustrated one of the tournament’s most feared attacks, recording a record sixth clean sheet in seven matches and ending France’s bid for a third World Cup title.
France entered the semi-final boasting a star-studded frontline led by captain Kylian Mbappé, Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé and Michael Olise, but Luis de la Fuente’s disciplined side gave them little room to operate throughout the contest.
Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal once again proved decisive, winning the first-half penalty that Mikel Oyarzabal calmly converted to hand Spain the lead.
Pedro Porro doubled the advantage after the break with a composed finish, effectively sealing Spain’s place in Sunday’s final.
Spain’s defensive organisation ensured Mbappé, who had scored eight goals before the semi-final, struggled to make his usual impact as La Roja successfully neutralised France’s biggest attacking threat.
“We were up against one of the best national teams in the world, but today they were facing the best team in the world,” Spain coach Luis de la Fuente said after the victory.
Fresh from celebrating his 19th birthday, Yamal almost crowned another outstanding display with a goal but saw his effort ruled out for offside.
Spain will now face either England or defending champions Argentina in the World Cup final, while France must settle for the third-place playoff after their hopes of lifting a third global crown came to an end.
