England and Argentina will renew one of football’s fiercest rivalries on Wednesday when both nations meet in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with a place in Sunday’s final against Spain at stake.

The heavyweight encounter at Atlanta Stadium brings together two former world champions with contrasting ambitions. Argentina are chasing a second consecutive World Cup title after lifting the trophy in Qatar in 2022, while England are aiming to end a 60-year wait for global glory since their only triumph in 1966.

Much of the spotlight will fall on Argentine captain Lionel Messi, who continues to defy age with another remarkable tournament. The 39-year-old has scored eight goals to share the lead in the Golden Boot race and remains the driving force behind Lionel Scaloni’s side.

Messi has guided Argentina through difficult knockout matches, producing decisive performances against Cape Verde and Egypt as the South Americans maintained their title defence.

England, meanwhile, arrive at the semi-finals under head coach Thomas Tuchel after showing resilience throughout the competition. While the Three Lions have not consistently produced their best football, they have found ways to win crucial matches and now stand just one victory away from another World Cup final.

Captain Harry Kane will once again shoulder England’s attacking responsibility, supported by a talented squad featuring Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden and Cole Palmer.

The fixture also revives one of international football’s most historic rivalries, shaped by memorable World Cup encounters over the decades. The teams famously met in the 1986 quarter-finals, where Diego Maradona scored both the controversial “Hand of God” goal and the stunning solo effort later named the “Goal of the Century.” England gained revenge with victory on penalties in the 1998 Round of 16.

Argentina will hope their experience and Messi’s brilliance can carry them into another final, while England believe their blend of youth and experience can finally overcome one of football’s greatest nations.

Awaiting the winners will be Spain, who booked their place in the final after defeating France 2-0 in Tuesday’s first semi-final. The clash promises to be one of the defining matches of the tournament, with only one side keeping alive its dream of lifting football’s biggest prize.
