South Africa Denies Offering Rewards for Reporting Undocumented Foreigners
The South African government has dismissed reports claiming that it offers financial rewards to citizens who report undocumented foreigners, describing the claims as false and misleading.
The South African government has refuted reports circulating in some quarters alleging that it has introduced a reward scheme for citizens who report undocumented foreigners to the authorities.
The South African authorities described the claims as false, misleading, and a deliberate distortion of the country's immigration policies and law enforcement procedures.
In a statement, the government clarified that no official policy or programme has been put in place to incentivise the reporting of undocumented foreigners by paying rewards to citizens, contrary to the viral reports.
The authorities explained that while the country has formal channels for reporting suspected immigration violations and other crimes, there is no monetary compensation attached to such reports as part of any official government scheme.
The South African government stressed that immigration enforcement remains the responsibility of the relevant law enforcement and immigration agencies, and that citizens are expected to report suspected violations through the appropriate legal channels.
The clarification comes amid heightened tensions surrounding the issue of undocumented foreigners in South Africa, a subject that has continued to attract intense public debate, occasional outbreaks of xenophobic incidents, and pressure on the government to strengthen its immigration policies.
In recent years, the issue of undocumented foreigners has remained a flashpoint in South Africa's domestic politics, with several political actors and pressure groups calling for stricter enforcement of immigration laws and stronger measures to address the country's economic and social challenges.
The South African government, while acknowledging the legitimate concerns of its citizens, has consistently maintained that immigration matters must be handled in a manner that respects human rights, international obligations, and the dignity of all individuals, regardless of their nationality.
The authorities also called on the public to disregard the viral reports about the alleged reward scheme and rely on official information from government sources for accurate guidance on immigration policies and enforcement procedures.
The government further appealed to South Africans and foreign nationals residing in the country to remain peaceful, embrace dialogue, and reject any form of incitement or actions capable of fuelling xenophobic sentiments or violence.
It stressed that South Africa remained committed to upholding the rule of law, protecting the rights of all individuals within its borders, and ensuring that immigration matters are addressed in line with the country's laws and international commitments.
The South African government also urged the media and social media users to verify reports about its policies and actions before sharing them publicly, noting that the spread of false information could fuel tensions and undermine social cohesion.
The clarification by the South African authorities is expected to address some of the concerns raised in recent days about the alleged reward scheme and reassure foreign nationals residing in the country, including thousands of Nigerians.
The Nigerian government, on its part, has continued to engage the South African authorities on issues affecting Nigerians in the country, including immigration matters, security concerns, and the welfare of citizens who have legally chosen to reside or do business in South Africa.
In recent months, the Federal Government of Nigeria has also been involved in the evacuation of distressed Nigerians from South Africa, particularly those affected by economic challenges, xenophobic incidents, and other situations affecting their welfare in the country.
Stakeholders, including human rights organisations, civil society groups, and diaspora associations, have continued to call on both governments to strengthen bilateral cooperation, protect the rights of Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa, and promote peaceful coexistence between locals and foreign communities.
The South African government reaffirmed its commitment to engaging with its citizens, foreign nationals, and diplomatic partners in finding sustainable solutions to immigration-related challenges, while maintaining a strong stance against illegal immigration in line with its national laws.
It urged citizens to play their constitutional role in supporting law enforcement efforts through legitimate means, while warning against any form of vigilantism, hate speech, or actions capable of undermining the country's peace and stability.
The development is expected to ease concerns among the foreign community in South Africa, particularly Nigerians and other African nationals who have continued to express worries about their safety and welfare in the country in recent times.
