Ekiti Approves Reuse of Textbooks in Secondary Schools, Bans Graduation Parties
Ekiti State Government approved textbook reuse among siblings and reaffirmed its ban on graduation ceremonies in schools, saying the policies will reduce education costs and promote affordable learning.
The Ekiti State Government has approved the reuse of textbooks by younger siblings in secondary schools, provided the books remain in good condition, as part of measures to reduce the financial burden on parents and make education more affordable across the state.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ekiti State Ministry of Education, Mr. Bayode Ogunmola, disclosed the decision in a statement issued in Ado Ekiti on Monday.
According to him, the government has retained its existing textbook review policy while introducing the approval for siblings to use previously purchased books that are still serviceable.
“The government has approved the reuse of textbooks by younger siblings, provided the books remain in good condition, as part of efforts to make education more affordable for families across the state,” Ogunmola stated.
He explained that under the current textbook review policy, textbooks used in primary schools will continue to be reviewed once every six years, while the review cycle for secondary school textbooks has been extended from three years to four years.
The permanent secretary noted that the review schedule remains subject to the guidelines of the National Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC).
Ogunmola also reiterated that the state government’s ban on graduation ceremonies for pupils and students in kindergarten, nursery, primary and secondary schools, whether public or private, remains in force.
He said the policy, which took effect from the 2025/2026 academic session, was introduced to ease financial pressure on parents and guardians while addressing the excessive social expectations often associated with school graduation events.
According to him, the government has no plans to reverse either of the policies.
He therefore directed proprietors of public and private schools, administrators, parents and other stakeholders to comply fully with the directives, warning that appropriate sanctions would be imposed on anyone found violating the regulations.
The ministry stressed that the measures are part of broader efforts by the state government to make education more accessible and affordable without compromising academic standards.
Ogunmola appreciated parents, school owners and other education stakeholders for their continued support and cooperation.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Ekiti State Government to implementing policies that promote quality education while reducing unnecessary costs for families, ensuring that every child in the state has access to affordable and sustainable learning opportunities.
