Former Senator and prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Dino Melaye, has stirred a storm on social media following his recent post about Nigeria's poverty ranking, drawing sharp criticism from a cross-section of Nigerians.

Melaye, known for his outspoken political commentaries and active presence on social media, had reportedly shared a post referencing Nigeria's worsening poverty situation and ranking on global indices, which he linked to the prevailing economic challenges under the current administration.

However, the post triggered widespread backlash, with many Nigerians taking to social media platforms to tear into the former senator, accusing him of insensitivity and hypocrisy, given his political profile and lifestyle.

A section of critics argued that Melaye and other members of the political class who had served at various levels of government over the years could not absolve themselves of responsibility for the country's worsening economic and social conditions.

They contended that the poverty and hardship that millions of Nigerians grapple with today are partly a consequence of decades of poor leadership, corruption, mismanagement of public resources, and weak governance, in which the political class played a major role.

Many social media users questioned the basis for Melaye's commentary, accusing him of attempting to score political points rather than offering genuine solutions or accepting responsibility as a former lawmaker who once benefited from the country's political system.

Some users described the former senator's post as opportunistic, suggesting that it was timed to ride on prevailing public sentiments and project him as a critic of the current administration ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Others pointed out the apparent contradiction between Melaye's flamboyant lifestyle, which has often been showcased on social media, and his commentary on the country's poverty situation, with many describing the post as out of touch with the realities of ordinary Nigerians.

A user reportedly told the former senator, "Shame on you," while expressing frustration over what they described as the political class's tendency to lament public hardship without addressing their own role in worsening the country's situation.

Other Nigerians, however, defended Melaye, arguing that his commentary highlighted important issues that needed national attention, regardless of the messenger.

They maintained that the country's poverty situation, which is reflected in various global rankings and economic indicators, deserved sustained attention from political leaders, policymakers, and citizens alike.

Some supporters of the former senator also dismissed the criticism as politically motivated, suggesting that the backlash was being driven by political opponents who were uncomfortable with his consistent criticism of the present administration.

The exchange has further fuelled the broader political conversation about the role of the political class, the credibility of public commentary by former officeholders, and the deep frustration of Nigerians over the country's economic challenges.

Melaye, who has remained a vocal critic of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Tinubu administration, has consistently used his social media platforms to question government policies and highlight what he describes as the worsening economic and security situation in the country.

The former senator, who served in the National Assembly representing Kogi West Senatorial District, has been a prominent voice within the PDP and a recurring figure in national political conversations, particularly during election cycles.

His political style, characterised by flamboyance, dramatic appearances, and consistent media engagements, has earned him a loyal following but also continues to attract criticism from those who view his approach as theatrical.

The latest backlash on social media is expected to further test his political resilience and influence, as the country prepares for what is shaping up to be a heated political season ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Beyond Melaye, the broader public reaction also reflects the deepening frustration of Nigerians with the country's leadership, with many citizens demanding more responsibility, accountability, and empathy from the political class at all levels.

The Federal Government and other policymakers have continued to defend their economic policies, including the controversial removal of fuel subsidy, the unification of exchange rates, and other reforms, insisting that the measures are necessary to set the country on the path of sustainable growth and prosperity.

Critics, however, argue that the impact of the reforms on ordinary Nigerians, including rising inflation, declining purchasing power, and increased hardship, has been significant, with calls for stronger social welfare measures and targeted interventions.

The poverty situation in Nigeria has continued to attract both domestic and international attention, with various reports highlighting the country's ranking among nations with the highest number of citizens living in poverty.

The debate sparked by Melaye's post is expected to continue in the coming days, as Nigerians grapple with the challenges of the present and weigh their options ahead of the next general elections.
