FG Not Doing Enough on Insecurity — Catholic Bishop Mamza
Catholic Bishop Stephen Dami Mamza says the Federal Government has failed to demonstrate enough political will to tackle insecurity, urging decisive action, improved intelligence, and better welfare for security personnel.
The Catholic Bishop of Yola Diocese, Bishop Stephen Dami Mamza, has criticised the Federal Government over what he described as inadequate efforts to tackle the persistent insecurity confronting the country.
Mamza, who is the immediate past Chairman of the Adamawa State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), said the Federal Government has not demonstrated sufficient political will to end the lingering security crisis affecting many parts of Nigeria.
The cleric made the remarks while speaking with journalists shortly after presiding over the closing Mass of the 2026 Yola Diocesan Pastoral Council held in Yola, the Adamawa State capital.
Expressing concern over the continued wave of killings, kidnappings, banditry, and attacks on communities, Mamza said the prevailing security situation remained alarming despite repeated assurances from government officials that efforts were being intensified to restore peace.
According to him, Nigerians are increasingly losing confidence in official promises because the reality on the ground has not improved significantly.
“The government must go beyond promises and take decisive action to address the security challenges confronting the nation,” the bishop said.
He stressed that safeguarding the lives and property of citizens should remain the primary responsibility of any government, insisting that more practical and effective measures were needed to reverse the current trend of insecurity.
“We are tired of failed promises,” he added.
Mamza called on the Federal Government to strengthen the nation’s security architecture by improving intelligence gathering and ensuring that security agencies are equipped with the necessary resources to perform their duties effectively.
He also emphasised the need to improve the welfare of security personnel, arguing that better remuneration, adequate equipment, and enhanced working conditions would boost their morale and operational effectiveness.
The bishop maintained that addressing insecurity requires genuine commitment, strategic planning, and sustained collaboration among all stakeholders, including security agencies, government institutions, community leaders, and citizens.
He urged the authorities to prioritise concrete actions capable of restoring public confidence and ensuring lasting peace across the country, noting that Nigerians deserve to live without fear and uncertainty.
Mamza further appealed to citizens to continue supporting lawful efforts aimed at promoting peace while remaining vigilant and cooperating with security agencies by providing credible information that could help prevent criminal activities.
