Schools Shut as NUT Protests Abduction of Teachers, Pupils, Demands Urgent Action
The National Union of Teachers (NUT) in Akwa Ibom State has joined a nationwide action by shutting down schools in solidarity with teachers and pupils abducted in Oyo State, demanding their immediate and safe release.
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Akwa Ibom State chapter, has directed the closure of public schools across the state in protest against the abduction of teachers and pupils in Oyo State.
The union said the decision was taken to express solidarity with the victims and draw national attention to the growing insecurity affecting schools and the education sector across the country.
According to NUT officials, the safety of teachers and students remains a top priority, stressing that the increasing incidents of kidnappings and attacks on educational institutions have created fear among educators, parents, and learners.
The union called on federal and state authorities to strengthen security around schools and take urgent measures to secure the release of those abducted. It also urged government agencies to implement long-term strategies aimed at protecting educational facilities nationwide.
Education stakeholders expressed concern that continued insecurity could disrupt academic activities and negatively affect learning outcomes if decisive action is not taken.
Parents and community leaders have also joined calls for improved security, emphasizing that schools should remain safe environments where children can learn without fear.
The development comes amid renewed concerns over attacks on schools in parts of Nigeria, with education advocates urging authorities to prioritize the protection of students and teachers.
NUT reaffirmed its commitment to defending the welfare and safety of its members while calling for collective efforts to address security challenges facing the education sector.
