Reps Urge Federal Action After Taraba Clash Kills Five, Displaces Residents
House of Representatives urges federal action after renewed Taraba communal clashes between Karinjo and Wurkun communities killed five people, displaced residents, and destroyed property in Karim Lamido LGA.
The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government and security agencies to urgently intervene in renewed communal violence between the Karinjo and Wurkun communities in Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State.
The appeal followed a motion moved by Mohammed Audu during plenary, highlighting a recent outbreak of violence that left at least five people dead, several others injured, and widespread destruction of property.
The lawmaker said the clash, which occurred on May 29, 2026, has worsened an already fragile security situation in the area, where communities also face threats from bandit groups operating across border regions linking Taraba, Plateau, Bauchi, and Gombe states.
According to him, more than 100 residents have been displaced, with entire communities forced to flee their homes due to fear of further attacks.
He noted that affected villages such as Salakan and others are now struggling with shortages of basic necessities, including food, clean water, and shelter.
Audu further lamented that the violence has severely impacted agrarian livelihoods, as farmlands, livestock, and farm produce were destroyed during the clashes, deepening economic hardship for residents.
Communities such as Mutun Daya, Bambur Zailani, Didango, Andami, and Mayo-Gauri were reported to be among those worst affected, with displaced persons now taking refuge in nearby areas.
Lawmakers expressed concern that recurring communal conflicts in the region continue to undermine peace and stability, particularly in rural areas already exposed to insecurity and criminal activity.
The House called on security agencies to intensify efforts to restore peace and prevent further escalation, while urging the Federal Government and humanitarian organisations to provide emergency relief to displaced persons.
It also stressed the need for sustained peace-building efforts, dialogue, and stronger security presence to address the root causes of the conflict and prevent future outbreaks of violence.
The intervention adds to growing national concern over persistent communal clashes contributing to displacement and humanitarian pressures across parts of the country.
