Panic in Lagos as Fire Guts Major Fuel Terminal in Apapa

Inferno, which reportedly started at a tank farm facility, sent thick plumes of black smoke into the atmosphere, visible from several kilometers away, including parts of the Lagos Island and Mainland.

The cause of the blaze, which broke out during early morning operations, is yet to be officially determined, but eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud explosion before the flames erupted.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, alongside the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) fire service, were quickly mobilized to the scene to battle the inferno.

First responders worked for several hours to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to adjacent fuel depots and critical maritime infrastructure. Strategic "cooling" operations were deployed on neighboring tanks to mitigate the risk of a secondary explosion.

The incident led to an immediate halt in fuel loading activities and triggered significant traffic gridlock along the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway as security agencies cordoned off the area to allow for unimpeded access by fire trucks and water tankers.

Commercial and maritime activities in the vicinity were also disrupted, with several businesses shutting down as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of their staff.

While significant property damage is expected, early reports from emergency officials indicate that no lives were lost in the incident. However, a few workers at the terminal were reportedly treated for minor injuries and smoke inhalation by medical teams on the ground.

The Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed that the fire has been brought under "tactical control." She assured the public that a full investigation would be launched to determine the exact cause of the outbreak once the site is fully dampened and secured.

In the wake of the fire, safety experts have once again called for stricter adherence to fire safety protocols at tank farms and fuel terminals, particularly during the high-temperature periods of the year.

The state government is expected to issue a formal statement regarding the incident and provide updates on the extent of the environmental impact following the massive discharge of smoke and chemicals.
