Police Begin Crackdown On Vehicles With Covered, Fake Number Plates In Ogun

The Ogun State Police Command has commenced a statewide enforcement operation targeting vehicles operating with covered, obscured, defaced, concealed, unauthorised, or missing registration number plates in a bid to strengthen security and reduce criminal activities across the state.

The command said the crackdown is in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police and is aimed at improving public safety by eliminating the anonymity often exploited by criminals during the commission of offences.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, ordered all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Team Commanders to impound any offending vehicles and ensure proper investigations are carried out in accordance with existing laws.

The enforcement exercise also extends to vehicles displaying fake, improperly issued, altered, or otherwise unauthorised registration number plates.

According to the police, only vehicles officially entitled to display flags under established protocols are exempted from the ongoing operation.

“The Ogun State Police Command has commenced statewide enforcement against vehicles operating with covered, obscured, defaced, concealed, unauthorised, or no registration number plates, in compliance with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police,” the statement read.

The command explained that the exercise is designed to strengthen security, enhance public safety, and deny criminal elements the anonymity they often use to evade law enforcement agencies.

Motorists, transport operators, fleet owners, and members of the public were advised to ensure that all vehicles carry valid, duly issued, and clearly visible registration plates at all times to avoid sanctions during enforcement.

The police emphasised that the operation is not intended to inconvenience law-abiding citizens but to improve the capacity of security agencies to identify vehicles, investigate crimes, and track down suspects involved in criminal activities.

“The Ogun State Police Command wishes to advise motorists, transport operators, fleet owners, and members of the public to ensure that their vehicles carry valid, duly issued, and clearly visible registration number plates at all times,” the statement added.

The command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property in the state and urged residents to cooperate with officers deployed for the exercise while continuing to provide timely and credible information to security agencies.

It also assured the public that personnel involved in the enforcement have been directed to conduct themselves professionally, courteously, and within the limits of the law throughout the operation.
