NATO fighter jets have shot down a foreign drone that entered Latvian airspace, Latvia’s Defence Ministry and armed forces have confirmed.

The ministry said the unmanned aerial vehicle entered Latvia as a result of Russian electronic warfare, although it did not immediately provide further details about the drone’s origin or its exact mission.

Latvia’s armed forces said the threat had been contained and that allied fighter jets successfully destroyed the drone after it entered the NATO member state’s airspace.

The incident comes amid growing concerns across Europe over unauthorised drone activity, particularly along NATO’s eastern flank, as Russia’s war in Ukraine continues.

Latvia, which shares a border with Russia, has experienced several drone incursions in recent years. Other countries in the region have also increased measures to counter potential drone threats.

The incident follows a similar operation on Monday, when French fighter jets participating in NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission shot down a drone in Latvia, reportedly marking the first time the alliance’s rapid-reaction force had destroyed a stray drone over the country.

Meanwhile, Finland imposed temporary aviation and maritime restrictions in parts of the eastern Gulf of Finland as a precaution against potential drone activity.

The latest incident highlights growing security concerns among NATO members along the alliance’s eastern borders as governments strengthen their ability to detect and respond to unmanned aerial threats.
