Oyo School Attack: Seven Teachers Abducted, One Killed — Makinde
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has confirmed that seven teachers were abducted during the recent attack on schools in the Oriire Local Government Area of the state, while efforts are still ongoing to determine the exact number of missing pupils.
The governor made the disclosure on Sunday while briefing journalists on the security situation following the invasion of schools by suspected gunmen.
Makinde said he had earlier met with service commanders and heads of security agencies in the state to receive updates on the kidnapping incident and coordinate response efforts.
He also confirmed that an Islamic Studies teacher was killed during the attack, describing the incident as tragic and deeply concerning.
According to him, security operatives have already arrested six suspects within the affected community, alongside three other persons of interest in connection with the attack.
Makinde noted that intelligence suggests the attackers may be linked to armed groups currently under pressure from intensified military operations in other parts of the country.
“With the pressure on the terrorists and the bandits in the North-West, they will keep moving southward,” the governor said.
He warned that the shifting patterns of criminal activity require stronger regional coordination and improved intelligence sharing among states and security agencies.
Makinde further explained that discussions are ongoing with authorities in neighbouring states to prevent the spread of insecurity, stressing the need for proactive measures.
“But the problem that we have is when you have pressure in one place, we must be prepared on this side to either repel or neutralise any terrorists fleeing the pressure points,” he added.
The governor assured residents that the state government is working closely with security agencies to ensure the safe rescue of abducted victims and to strengthen security around schools and vulnerable communities across Oyo State.
