Oyo Abduction: Protesters Verbally Attack Police Over Kidnapped Children, Teachers
Angry protesters in Ibadan confronted police officers during demonstrations over the Oyo school abductions, demanding urgent action to rescue kidnapped pupils and teachers still in captivity.
Tension flared in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Wednesday as protesters angered by the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area engaged in a heated exchange with police officers during a demonstration.
The protesters, who gathered to demand the immediate release of the victims, expressed frustration over the continued captivity of the abducted children and teachers despite ongoing security operations.
During the protest, several demonstrators challenged the presence of security personnel, insisting that greater efforts should be directed toward rescuing those still being held by kidnappers.
Visibly emotional participants accused authorities of failing to respond swiftly enough to the crisis and questioned the effectiveness of ongoing rescue efforts.
One protester, speaking during the confrontation, rejected calls by police officers for calm, arguing that families whose loved ones remained in captivity had every reason to be distressed.
The protester lamented that a teacher had reportedly lost his life during the incident and maintained that citizens had the right to voice their anger and demand accountability from security agencies.
The demonstrators repeatedly called for the unconditional release of all abducted pupils and teachers, urging security forces to intensify efforts to track down the kidnappers and secure the victims’ freedom.
The protest forms part of growing nationwide reactions to the abduction, which has sparked demonstrations, statements from labour unions, religious groups, lawmakers, and other stakeholders concerned about rising insecurity and attacks on educational institutions.
Authorities have continued to assure the public that security personnel are working to rescue the victims and apprehend those responsible, while investigations and search operations remain ongoing.
The abduction has become a major national issue, reigniting concerns about school safety and the broader security challenges facing communities across Nigeria.
