NLC Threatens Action Over Insecurity, Demands Urgent Government Response
NLC has threatened solidarity action over worsening insecurity and recent school abductions, urging government to take urgent, concrete steps to protect workers, students, and communities across Nigeria.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has warned that it may embark on nationwide solidarity actions if the Federal Government fails to take decisive steps to address Nigeria’s worsening insecurity.
The warning was contained in a statement signed by NLC President, Joe Ajaero, following a wave of abductions targeting schoolchildren and teachers across parts of the country.
The union expressed support for members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), who recently embarked on strike in protest over repeated attacks and kidnappings affecting schools and education workers.
The NLC described the situation as unacceptable, stressing that teachers and other public workers are increasingly exposed to violent attacks while performing their duties.
It warned that continued inaction by authorities could trigger broader industrial and solidarity actions across the labour movement.
The statement also highlighted concern over the psychological and physical toll of insecurity on vulnerable groups, including health workers, local government staff, and students.
According to the union, recent abductions, including incidents in Oyo State, reflect a nationwide security crisis stretching from Zamfara to other parts of the country.
The labour body criticised what it described as repeated assurances from authorities without concrete improvements in safety conditions.
It urged the Federal Government and relevant security agencies to move beyond statements of reassurance and take measurable action to rescue abducted victims and prevent further incidents.
The NLC concluded by reaffirming its commitment to collective security advocacy, warning that failure to act could lead to escalated labour responses in defence of workers and communities.
