The Federal Ministry of Works has announced a ban on the operation of commercial motorcycles and tricycles along the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as part of measures to protect the newly constructed superhighway from misuse and premature deterioration.

The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Olufemi Dare, disclosed the development on Sunday, saying the restriction will take effect this week.

According to Dare, the decision was taken to preserve the structural integrity of the highway and ensure its long-term durability as one of Nigeria’s flagship infrastructure projects.

He explained that the ministry was determined to prevent activities capable of damaging the road or compromising the safety of motorists using the facility.

In addition to the ban on motorcycles and tricycles, the ministry also prohibited indiscriminate parking of trucks and articulated vehicles along the coastal highway and on bridges across Lagos State.

Dare noted that abandoned vehicles and illegal parking constitute safety hazards and could damage critical road infrastructure if left unchecked.

The Federal Controller further warned against the indiscriminate dumping of refuse along highway corridors, describing the practice as harmful to public infrastructure and detrimental to environmental sanitation.

According to him, the ministry will not tolerate activities capable of obstructing drainage channels or reducing the lifespan of the highway.

He stated that strict enforcement measures would commence immediately, warning that anyone found violating the new directives would face appropriate sanctions.

To ensure effective compliance, Dare revealed that warning signages outlining the restrictions have already been installed along the highway.

He added that task force officials would be deployed to strategic locations to monitor activities and enforce the regulations.

Describing the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as a world-class infrastructure project, Dare stressed the importance of proper maintenance and responsible usage by all road users.

He said preserving the road is a shared responsibility that requires the cooperation of motorists, transport operators and surrounding communities.

The Federal Controller urged members of the public to comply fully with the new rules in the interest of public safety and national development.

According to him, protecting the highway from abuse will extend its lifespan, reduce maintenance costs and ensure Nigerians continue to enjoy the benefits of the massive investment made by the Federal Government.

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is one of the Federal Government’s flagship road projects designed to improve transportation, boost economic activities and strengthen connectivity between coastal states across southern Nigeria.

The ministry maintained that strict adherence to the regulations is necessary to preserve the quality and functionality of the strategic road network for future generations.
